Temporary Museum Closure

The Laogai Museum will be temporarily closed from tomorrow Wednesday, May 25, 2016 through Memorial Day. The Museum will resume normal hours on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 10am to 6pm. The Laogai Museum would like to apologize for any inconvenience and looks forward to guests visiting in the future. 

Yale University Students Tour the Laogai Museum

On Friday November 13, students from Yale University will visit the Laogai Research Foundation. Students will be fortunate to hear Executive Director Harry Wu recount his experiences in China’s laogai system. Then a tour of the Laogai Museum where issues include the Chinese Communist Party’s rise to power, life in the laogai and China’s human rights legacy as it becomes more of a global power.

Laogai Museum Relocating

The Laogai Museum, the only museum in the United States solely dedicated to promoting human rights and exposing Communist Party persecution in the People’s Republic of China, is moving to a new location within the historic DuPont Circle neighborhood. The new location of the Museum will be at 1901 18th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009. The Museum will be closed during the course of the move from August 1st until September 15th.*

American University Students Tour the Laogai Museum

A group of students from American University's human rights program visited the Laogai Museum on January 27. The students received guided tours of the artifacts on display in the museum from Laogai Research Foundation staff and were treated to a presentation delivered by Executive Director Harry Wu on his experiences in China’s laogai system.  Issues discussed during the tour included how the Chinese Communist Party has maintained power over the decades and what China’s human rights legacy will be as it becomes more of global power.
