Filmmaker Du Bin Released from Detention

Chinese filmmaker Du Bin has been released from prison after five weeks of detention. He was held for "causing a disturbance" because of his book about the 1989 Tiananmen protests, as well as his documentary about the Masanjia labor camp. Du said that he was treated well during his time in jail, but many of his personal belongings that were seized and searched by the police officials have not been returned to him.

Tibetan Monk Shot, Others Injured for Dalai Lama Birthday Prayers

A Tibetan monk is in critical condition, and others are severely injured from a standoff with Chinese police authorities. A crowd of Tibetan monks and nuns, as well as hundreds of Tibetans had gathered to say prayers for the Dalai Lama on his 78th birthday. A convey from the Chinese police arrived, and surrounded the area, barring the Tibetans from saying their prayers. When a few Tibetans tried to break through the barrier, the police opened fire on the unarmed crowd. 

North Korean defectors claim they were forced to manufacture goods for China

A survey of North Korean defectors indicates that regime forces labor camp inmates to produce goods for the Chinese market. The vast majority of prisoners who participated in the survey had been arrested for attempting to flee North Korea for China. As a matter of routine, Chinese authorities send captured North Korean defectors back to North Korea. Defectors face up to five years in a labor camp for attempting to escape to China. 

Chinese Activist to Sue Over Labor Camp Term

Yu Yunfung, Chinese human rights activist, who was detained in a labor camp for two years for "disturbance of public order" and "opposing the Party and opposing socialism" plans to sue the government for illegal detention. Yu was held in the labor camps after texting a political poem to a friend. He states that conditions inside the prison were unbearable, and the government imposed unjust restrictions on his activity. It is believed that 160,000 people are held in the Chinese labor camps at any given time.
